It almost sounds like a bad intro to a late night infomercial: Stretch marks got you down? Well now you can turn them into rainbows! It seems like the type of thing that you would have to be half asleep and mostly drunk to buy into, but it is exactly what some artists are doing. Not only is it for real, it is amazing. There is an artist by the name Zinteta, who lives in Barcelona, and she has been working to create art that celebrates feminism. Her main focal points thus far have been stretch marks and menstruation. Her work is sure to reverberate with the current wave of news related to sexual harassment and abuse, which has rallied around the #metoo slogan. She says, “There are many things happening in my town that I couldn’t be silent on, such as the male microaggression toward the female body. I know there are countries that have it worse than here in Spain, but I couldn’t stay silent.”

Zinteta creates very colorful works on the female body to cover stretch marks, and she also creates tie-dyed underwear that are colored around the crotch to celebrate menstruation. On this topic, she says, “We live in 2017. Why is there still stigma revolving around periods?” Zinteta is only 21 years old, so she will be an interesting figure to keep an eye for years to come.

Body paint isn’t the only way to deal with stretch marks that some women would prefer not to have. For a more lasting solution, there are tattoo artists such as Rodolpho Torres from São Paulo, who have found ways to effectively mask the marks. He essentially uses a color of ink that mimics the skin pigment, and he inks the sections of skin that have been streaked with stretch marks. The effect reminds me of permanent makeup, but this technique is for places other than the face.

It is important to note that the stretch marks do not actually disappear; they are merely masked, the way makeup can be used to mask acne or scars. Torres has amassed quite a following on Instagram with 1.2 million followers, and many people are begging him to come to their country and do tattoos. However, some doctors warn against this procedure. Dr. Doris Day, a dermatologist, cautioned that there are risks involved. He says, "The risk is, if [a tattoo] is done by someone who doesn't understand how to [treat skin], you can end up with a scar, and a potentially worse problem, especially in an area that's already thinner and missing some of the essential elements of skin."

Regardless of medical opinions, the results of Torres’ stretch mark tattoos are impressive. He will surely remain a popular man for quite some time, and he isn’t the only person doing it. Dominique Bossavy, a cosmetic tattoo artist who works out of offices in Beverly Hills, New York, and Paris, has been perfecting what she calls nano color infusion. This method utilizes a digital tattoo pen, and the results speak for themselves. The stretch marks are nowhere to be seen after she is finished. So there are options for people who do not live in Brazil, you’ll just have to do some research to track them down. If getting this type of tattoo makes you more confident, then by all means, do what makes you happy. However, to go along with the sentiments of Zinteta, stretch marks are beautiful. They are a part of life, and instead of stigmatizing them, maybe we should learn to accept and even celebrate them with rainbows.
