In the past decade, microblading has become one of the hottest trends in the beauty and permanent makeup industry. Plenty of celebrities and social media influencers swear by it for perfect brows, but if you’re just arriving to the microblading party, you might have some questions. We’re here to help.
What is microblading?
Microblading is a cosmetic tattooing technique that uses a specialized hand tool called a microblading stylus to insert pigment into the epidermis. The stylus uses a permanent makeup needle to create fine, precise strokes that closely mimic the appearance of natural hair. Microblading has become popular because it produces the most natural look of all the available cosmetic eyebrow tattooing techniques.
Is microblading the same as tattooing?
Microblading and tattooing are similar in principle, but there are a few critical differences between the procedures. First, microblading inserts pigment into only the uppermost layer of skin, the epidermis. This layer deteriorates and regenerates much more quickly than the dermis, the lower layer of the skin into which ink is injected during tattooing. Because microblading only penetrates the upper layer of skin, it requires much less force than tattooing, meaning the procedure also hurts much less than tattooing. Additionally, the pigments used in microblading and tattooing are substantially different. Tattoo inks are highly concentrated in order to achieve bold, true colors when injected into the skin. Microblading pigments, however, are far less concentrated. This helps to achieve the more subtle and natural skin and hair tones necessary for permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing.
How long does microblading last?
Microblading is not permanent, which is another major difference between it and tattooing. Microblading typically lasts from 1-2 years, with results varying depending on the individual’s lifestyle, skincare and skin type. In general, people with oilier skin will find that microblading fades more quickly for them than for those with drier skin. It is common, however, for most microblading customers to get occasional touch-ups.
Is microblading safe for everyone?
As long as it is conducted by a certified permanent makeup technician using sterile supplies in a hygienic space, microblading is generally safe. However, there are some people for whom microblading may not be safe or suitable. People with extremely oily skin, people who are taking Accutane, people prone to keloids, and people with skin conditions on or around their eyebrows should all avoid microblading.
