EU Nickel Directive Information

European Union Nickel Directive The Nickel Directive is only enforced in Europe and is not in effect anywhere else. As a result of various problems associated with nickel sensitisation on clothes and jewelry, the European Community (EC) Nickel Directive (76/769/EEC - now 94/27/EEC) was enacted on the 20th of July 1999, and became law in the EU on the 20th of January 2000. The directive was devised due to fears about allergic reactions and sensitisation to nickel, and has been designed to reduce any problems caused by this metal. There is no ambiguity. Any supplier saying this Directive is not law is misguided or ill-informed. It is the law and moreover, both the supplier and the piercer share the responsibility of ensuring that this legislation is enforced. The directive is a large and complex document, but can be simply put as follows:

• Items intended to come into contact with BROKEN skin are restricted to a mass of 0.05% nickel.
• Items intended to come into close and prolonged contact with skin are restricted to a release rate of 0.5ug/cm2week of nickel.
• 316L SURGICAL STEEL contains between 6-13% nickel and it does not conform to the first part of the Directive and it cannot, therefore, be used for fresh piercings. It can only be used after the healing process (also known as 'epithelization') has taken place, as replacement jewelry, since it does not release nickel.
• TITANIUM does not contain nickel but can attract it during the manufacturing process. This means that it does conform to the first part of the Directive, but may not conform to the nickel release directive, depending on the standards of the manufacturer.

EU Nickel Directive 76/769/EEC Part 1 The law states that body piercing assemblies present during epithelisation must be homogenous and contain no more than 500ppm of nickel. Part 2 The law states that body piercing assemblies worn in the body once the wound has healed must release nickel at a rate of no more than 0.5ug/cm2/week. Directiva del Níquel en la Unión Europea La directiva del Níquel es sólo vigente en Europa y no tiene efecto fuera de esta. Como resultado de varios problemas asociados con la sensibilización sobre ropa y joyería, la Directiva sobre el Níquel (76/769EEC- ahora 94/27/EEC) en la Comunidad Europea (EC) fue redactada el 20 de Julio del 1999, y fue aprobada la ley en la EU el 20 de Enero del 2000. La directiva fue creada por los miedos a que el Níquel creara reacciones alérgicas y sensibilización, ha sido estipulada para reducir problemas causados por este metal. No existe una ambigüedad. Cualquier vendedor que diga que esta Directiva no es una ley vigente esta mal informado o equivocado. Es una ley y es responsabilidad del proveedor y del piercer que ésta sea seguida. La directiva es un documento largo y complicado, pero puede ser trazado simplemente como sigue:

• Cualquier elemento que pueda estar en contacto con la piel rota tiene que tener una masa restringida de no más 0.05 de níquel.
• Artículos que vayan a estar en un prolongado y cercano contacto con la piel son restringidos a soltar 0.5ug/cm2semanas de níquel.
• 316L Acero quirúrgico contiene entre 6-13% de níquel y no se ajusta a la primera parte de la Directiva y por lo tanto, no puede ser usado para hacer piercings nuevos. Solamente puede ser usado después del proceso de curación (también llamado como “epitilización”), para el reemplace de la joyería, porque esta no desprende níquel.
• El TITANIO no contiene níquel pero puede atraerlo durante el proceso de fabricación. Esto significa que si se ajusta a la primera parte de la directiva, pero puede ser que no se ajuste a la directiva de la liberación del níquel, y esto depende de las normas del que lo fabrica.

EU Nickel Directive 76/769/EEC PARTE 1 La ley dicta que el ensamble de piercings para el cuerpo presentes durante el proceso de epitelización deben ser homogéneos y no deben contener más de 500ppm de níquel. PARTE 2 La ley dicta que el ensamble de piercings para el cuerpo llevados en el cuerpo cuando la herida ya está curada puede soltar níquel a un porcentaje de 0.5ug/cm2/ por semana.
